How to Install a Commercial Car Lift in Your Shop

News 12/13/2024

Well, let me tell ya about these here commercial car lifts. I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I’ve seen a thing or two, and I can tell ya what’s what.

First off, ya gotta figure out what kinda cars you’re workin’ on. Big ol’ trucks? Little bitty cars? Makes a difference, see? Gotta get a lift that can handle the load. Don’t wanna be stuck with somethin’ that can’t lift your work, that’d be a real pickle. Like tryin’ to lift a cow with a chicken rope, just ain’t gonna work.

And think about the future, too. Maybe you only workin’ on small cars now, but what about later? Might get more business, bigger cars, who knows? Better to be safe than sorry, get a lift that can handle a bit more, like gettin’ shoes a size too big, room to grow. That’s what I always say.

Now, space, that’s a big one. You ain’t got all the room in the world, ya know? These lifts, they take up space. A fella told me, for every regular lift, you need ’bout 12 feet of space side by side. So, if you got a bunch of lifts, that adds up quick. Gotta plan it out, like plantin’ corn, gotta give ’em space to grow. If your shop is small, you might need to think harder about what to do. Don’t want them cars bumping into each other now, do ya?

Some fellas, they use these fancy air lines, Pex they call ’em. Sounds complicated to me, but they say it helps. And then they got this “big upgrade” they do. I don’t know the details, but it’s supposed to make things better. Always somethin’ new, these young fellas comin’ up with.

  • Space Savin’: If you thinkin’ your garage is too small, don’t worry none. These lifts, they actually save space. You just need ’bout 11 or 12 feet high, and the lift fits right in one bay. Smart, ain’t it? They can even fix up your garage doors so they open up higher, if need be.
  • Where to Put It: Now, where you put the lift, that’s important. Gotta think about the space in front. Them lifts, they got arms, some are this way, some are that way. If the arms are all mixed up lookin’, ya gotta put the middle ’bout 9 or 10 feet from the wall. If they straight across, then 12 feet is better. Kinda like dancin’, gotta have room to move.
  • Size Matters: They say you need at least 12 feet wide and 24 feet long for each bay. That way you got room to move around, don’t feel all cramped up. Gives ya wiggle room, ya know? Like wearin’ loose pants after a big meal.

And don’t forget the floor! Gotta be strong, that concrete. They say four inches thick is the least you need, but six is better. Don’t want that lift sinkin’ into the ground, that’d be a mess. Like buildin’ a house on sand, ain’t gonna last.

So, there ya have it. A little bit about commercial car lifts. Ain’t rocket science, but ya gotta think it through. Get the right size, make sure ya got enough space, and don’t skimp on the concrete. And if ya ain’t sure, ask somebody who knows. No shame in askin’ for help, even an old hen like me knows that.
