Garage Car Lift Storage: How to Choose and Install
News 12/08/2024
Hey there, y’all! Let’s talk about them garage car lifts, you know, the things that lift your car up so you can poke around underneath. I ain’t no expert, but I’ve heard some things, seen some things, and I’m gonna tell ya what I know.
First off, you gotta figure out what kinda car lift you need. Some lift a whole bunch, some just a little. It’s like pickin’ potatoes, some are big, some are small, ya gotta get the right size for your pot, ya know? They got these things called “lifting capacity,” that just means how much weight they can hold. You got a big ol’ truck, you need a lift that can handle it. Little car, little lift, makes sense, right? I heard tell some lifts can hold 7,000 pounds, some even more, like 10,000 or even 14,000 pounds! That’s a whole lotta weight!
Now, how big’s your garage? You can’t just cram a lift in there like stuffin’ sausages. You gotta measure things, see how high your ceiling is. They say you need at least 12 feet high, so the car don’t hit the roof when you lift it up. And you need space around the lift too, so you ain’t bangin’ into walls and stuff. I figure, about six feet under the car, maybe five or six feet for the car itself, and a little extra space on top, just to be safe.
Then there’s the floor of your garage. It’s gotta be strong, real strong. You’re puttin’ a lot of weight on it, the car and the lift together. They say you need at least four inches of good, thick concrete. But if you’re liftin’ somethin’ real heavy, like one of them big trucks, you might need six or even eight inches. Don’t want that floor crackin’ on ya, that’d be a mess!
- Lifting Capacity: How much weight can it hold?
- Garage Space: Do you have enough room? Ceiling height is important!
- Concrete Thickness: Is your floor strong enough?
Now, let’s talk about how far from the wall you should put that lift. If you have one of them lifts with the arms that ain’t the same on both sides, you probably want it about nine or ten feet from the wall. That’s from the middle of the posts, not the edge, mind you. If the arms are the same on both sides, well, that’s a different story, but we ain’t gettin’ into that today.
And what about the price? Well, nothin’s free in this world, that’s for sure. From what I hear, these lifts can cost ya anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000. Some are cheaper, some are more expensive. Just like buyin’ a hen, some lay more eggs, some lay less, ya get what ya pay for, I reckon.
So, there ya have it. A little bit about garage car lifts. Just remember, measure your garage, think about how heavy your car is, and make sure your floor is strong enough. And don’t go spendin’ more money than you got to. Be smart about it, ya hear? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my chickens.
One more thing, if you’re gonna get one of them portable half lifts, those might be a good place to start if you ain’t never had a lift before. Kinda like learnin’ to drive a tractor before you try drivin’ a combine.
Alright, I’m done talkin’ your ears off now. Go on and get yourself a lift, if that’s what you need. Just be safe about it, and don’t forget to grease the gears every now and then!
